Context
A study by the Union Health Ministry, along with partner organisations, has suggested that introducing the Hexavalent Vaccine (six-in-one) into India’s Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) could improve childhood immunisation by reducing the number of injections, easing logistics, and enhancing programme efficiency.
Explanation
- Hexavalent (Six-in-One) Vaccine is a combination vaccine providing protection against Diphtheria, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis B, Poliomyelitis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) through a single injection.
- Combination vaccines reduce the number of injections, improve vaccination coverage, increase compliance, and minimize missed doses.
- Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), launched in 1985, is implemented by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and provides free vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases for infants, children, and pregnant women.
- UIP is one of the world’s largest public health programmes and supports Mission Indradhanush, which targets children who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
- The proposed vaccine can reduce cold-chain burden, improve health system efficiency, and strengthen routine immunisation.
