Context
Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the GOBARdhan National Unified Scheme with an outlay of ₹23,731 crore until 2035–36. It aims to expand domestic compressed biogas (CBG) production through assured offtake, administered pricing and capital support.
Explanation
- GOBARdhan stands for Galvanising Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan.
- It converts cattle dung, agricultural residue, press mud and municipal organic waste into useful products.
- Anaerobic digestion, or decomposition without oxygen, produces methane-rich biogas.
- Purified and compressed biogas becomes CBG, which can substitute Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and blend with Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
- The remaining bio-slurry can be used as organic manure.
- The scheme promotes a circular economy, waste management, rural employment, energy security and lower greenhouse-gas emissions.
