Context
Under Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY), Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir has established Smart Classrooms in government schools of SC-dominated villages, including remote and border areas, to promote digital and inclusive education.
Explanation
- PM-AJAY is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment aimed at reducing poverty and improving socio-economic indicators among Scheduled Caste (SC) communities.
- It was formulated by merging three existing schemes: Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY), Special Central Assistance to SC Sub Plan (SCA to SCSP) and Babu Jagjivan Ram Chhatrawas Yojana (BJRCY).
- Its major components include development of SC-dominated villages into Adarsh Grams, Grants-in-Aid for socio-economic development projects, and construction/repair of hostels.
- Village development focuses on reducing infrastructure and service gaps in areas such as education, sanitation, drinking water, roads and livelihoods.
- Kathua’s Smart Classrooms illustrate its role in promoting digital inclusion and educational infrastructure in disadvantaged areas.
