Context
India’s soybean-oil imports were recently projected to reach a record 6.2 lakh tonnes in August 2026. Competitive prices, festival demand and disruption of sunflower-oil shipments from the Black Sea pushed refiners towards soybean oil.
Explanation
- Soybean oil is extracted by crushing soybeans; the residual protein-rich soymeal is used mainly as animal feed.
- Soybean is a leguminous kharif oilseed crop that fixes atmospheric nitrogen through bacteria in its root nodules.
- India’s edible-oil basket includes palm, soybean, sunflower, mustard, groundnut and rice-bran oils.
- Russia and Ukraine are major sunflower-oil suppliers; attacks on Black Sea ports delayed shipments, and refiners substituted the cheaper, available soybean oil.
- Flexible imports can prevent shortages and check food inflation, but high import dependence raises the import bill and exposes consumers to global prices, freight and exchange-rate risks.
- Cheap imports can also depress domestic oilseed prices and discourage Indian farmers.
- India met only about 44% of its edible-oil demand domestically in 2023–24.
- The National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds (2024) aims to raise oilseed production and productivity, while NMEO–Oil Palm promotes domestic crude palm oil.
