Context
Recently, prices of consumer electronics such as air conditioners, smartphones, televisions and computers have risen sharply due to a global shortage of memory chips. The shortage is linked partly to growing Artificial Intelligence (AI) demand diverting semiconductor manufacturing capacity towards advanced chips.

- Semiconductors are materials used to manufacture electronic chips that control, process or store data in electronic devices.
- Memory chips store digital information; major types include Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NAND flash memory.
- The AI boom has increased demand for advanced and high-performance memory, encouraging manufacturers to shift production capacity towards more profitable AI-related chips.
- This has reduced supplies of conventional memory used in smartphones, computers and household appliances.
- Since semiconductor manufacturing requires highly specialised fabrication facilities and long capacity-expansion periods, supply cannot increase immediately.
- Rising chip costs increase manufacturers’ input costs, which may be passed on to consumers through higher retail prices.
- This technology-driven increase in electronics prices is informally described as “chipflation”, combining chip and inflation.
