The Prime Minister paid tributes to Sree Narayana Guru on his birth anniversary, highlighting his contribution as a social reformer, spiritual leader and thinker. Guru worked against caste discrimination and emphasised social equality, dignity, education and spiritual upliftment.
Explanation
- Sree Narayana Guru (1856–1928) was a major social and spiritual reformer from Kerala, associated particularly with the upliftment of the Ezhava community.
- He challenged caste hierarchy, untouchability and restrictions on lower castes through social and religious reform.
- In 1888, he consecrated a Shiva idol at Aruvippuram, challenging the traditional monopoly of upper-caste priests over temple consecration.
- His philosophy is popularly expressed through “One Caste, One Religion, One God for Man.”
- In 1903, his followers established the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, with Dr. Palpu and Kumaran Asan playing important roles.
- He promoted education, organisation and economic advancement as instruments of social emancipation.
- He also supported inter-caste equality and religious harmony, contributing significantly to Kerala’s broader social reform movement.
