Context
A study from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, found that vultures feeding at a livestock carcass dumping site faced significant electrocution risk from nearby high-tension power infrastructure. Relocating the dumping site about 2.4 km away in 2015 was followed by no recorded vulture mortality during limited post-relocation monitoring.

- Vultures are scavenging birds that provide an important ecosystem service by rapidly disposing of animal carcasses and reducing disease risks.
- Indian vulture populations have suffered severe declines due mainly to veterinary NSAIDs such as diclofenac, along with food scarcity, habitat loss and electrocution.
- Power lines and associated infrastructure can kill large soaring birds through electrocution or collision, particularly near feeding and congregation sites.
- The Dehradun study recorded 46 vulture carcasses attributable to electrocution near high-tension infrastructure.
- The Himalayan griffon (Gyps himalayensis) accounted for the highest proportion of observed mortality; Eurasian griffon and cinereous vulture were also affected.
- Moving carcass dumps away from hazardous electricity infrastructure is a simple site-based conservation measure that can reduce exposure without eliminating an important food source.
- Such interventions complement vulture-safe veterinary drugs, habitat protection and safe power infrastructure.
