Context
The Construction and Infrastructure Equipment (CIE) Scheme, announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. It seeks to promote local manufacturing, strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on imported equipment and components.
Explanation
- Construction and Infrastructure Equipment (CIE) includes machinery used in construction, mining and infrastructure projects, such as excavators, cranes, loaders and road-building equipment.
- India is the world’s third-largest construction-equipment market, after China and the United States.
- The sector was valued at around ₹97,500 crore in 2024-25 and provides direct employment to about 10 lakh people.
- The CIE Scheme was announced with an estimated initial outlay of ₹200 crore; its detailed modalities are yet to be finalised.
- Greater MSME participation can support component manufacturing, technology development and employment.
- The initiative complements India’s broader goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat, manufacturing competitiveness and infrastructure-led economic growth.
