Context
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched Hub-and-Spoke international flight operations from Ahmedabad, making it the third spoke airport after Varanasi and Amritsar. The initiative connects passengers from these airports to international destinations through Delhi as the designated hub.
Explanation
- The Hub-and-Spoke model channels passengers from multiple spoke airports through a central hub airport for onward international connections.
- Under the present framework, Delhi functions as the hub, while Varanasi, Amritsar and Ahmedabad are the first three spoke airports.
- Passengers complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities at the originating spoke airport, which must itself be an international airport.
- At Delhi, they can transfer directly to the onward international flight without repeating these procedures; baggage is checked through to the final destination.
- The model aims to reduce dependence on foreign transit hubs and improve the competitiveness of Indian airlines and airports.
- It forms part of India’s International Aviation Hub Strategy, targeting a preferred Indian aviation hub by 2030 and a leading global hub by 2047.
- It can improve connectivity, airport utilisation, trade, tourism and regional economic development.
