Context
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) rescued over 3,800 children and facilitated registration of more than 575 FIRs during its Pan-India Rescue and Rehabilitation Campaign, conducted from June 12 to August 31, 2026.
Explanation:
- NCPCR is a statutory body established under the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005 and functions under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
- It monitors protection of the rights of children below 18 years and reviews safeguards provided under laws and policies concerning children.
- Article 24 of the Constitution prohibits employment of children below 14 years in factories, mines and other hazardous employment.
- Article 21A guarantees free and compulsory education to children aged 6–14 years, while Article 39(e) and (f) provide Directive Principles concerning child protection.
- The Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, as amended in 2016, prohibits employment of children below 14 years, subject to specified exceptions, and prohibits adolescents aged 14–18 years from hazardous occupations/processes.
- Rescue must be followed by rehabilitation, educational mainstreaming, restoration and compensation, alongside action against offenders.
