Context
The United Kingdom has announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. It cited settlement expansion and threats to the two-state solution, particularly from proposed construction in the E1 Corridor.
Explanation
- The E1 Corridor is an area of about 12 sq. km in the occupied West Bank, located east of Jerusalem between East Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim.
- Israel proposes settlement construction and infrastructure in E1 to strengthen territorial links between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim.
- Development in E1 could divide the northern and southern West Bank, thereby weakening the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian state.
- It could also separate East Jerusalem from nearby Palestinian areas. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as their future capital.
- The two-state solution proposes an independent Palestinian state existing peacefully alongside Israel.
- However, Israel’s current government opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state. In 2024, the Israeli Knesset also passed a declaration opposing Palestinian statehood, directly conflicting with the two-state framework.
- The United Nations and International Court of Justice consider Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory contrary to international law, while Israel disputes this position.
