Context
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has launched Sagar Manthan, an indigenous Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) being built for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The vessel will strengthen India’s deep-sea exploration and marine scientific research capabilities.
Explanation
- Ocean Research Vessels (ORVs) are specialised ships equipped for oceanographic surveys, marine geology, geophysics, biology and climate research.
- Sagar Manthan is being constructed by GRSE, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking, at Kolkata.
- It is being built for NCPOR, an autonomous research institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), headquartered in Goa.
- NCPOR coordinates India’s scientific research in the polar regions and conducts research in the Southern Ocean and other ocean domains.
- The vessel is about 89.5 m long, with a gross tonnage of around 5,900 tonnes, and is expected to become operational in 2028.
- It will support deep-ocean observations, seabed studies, resource exploration and marine ecosystem research.
- Such capabilities complement India’s Deep Ocean Mission, which focuses on deep-sea technology, biodiversity, ocean resources and exploration.
