Lakes and Streams in the Global Carbon Cycle (Source: Down To Earth)

Context

A 2026 study of Arctic stream–lake networks in Sweden found that lake-rich networks can release a greater share of carbon into the atmosphere instead of transporting it downstream. Lakes increase water residence time, allowing greater microbial conversion of dissolved organic carbon into CO₂.

Lakes and Carbon Cycle: Inland Waters as Carbon Regulators

Explanation

  • The carbon cycle involves movement of carbon among the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.
  • Inland waters receive dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from soils, vegetation and groundwater and transport it through river networks.
  • Microorganisms mineralise DOC, converting organic carbon into inorganic forms, including CO₂, which may escape to the atmosphere.
  • Lakes slow water movement and increase network residence time—the period water remains within a connected stream–lake system.
  • Longer residence time allows greater microbial processing, making lake-rich networks more efficient at converting DOC into CO₂.
  • Carbon therefore has competing fates: atmospheric emission, downstream export, or storage/sedimentation.
  • Carbon emissions relative to downstream export were highest during warm, low-flow summers, when residence time and microbial activity increase.
  • Arctic warming could alter hydrology and strengthen such carbon-cycle feedbacks.
