Context
A recent study warns that Himalayan glacier mass loss is accelerating, pushing the region towards “peak water” by around mid-century. After this point, glacier-fed river flows could begin declining, with major implications for water security and downstream populations.

Explanation
- Peak water is the point when annual glacier meltwater runoff reaches its maximum; thereafter, runoff declines as the glacier’s ice reserves shrink.
- Initially, global warming accelerates glacier melting, temporarily increasing meltwater and river discharge.
- Continued melting reduces glacier mass, eventually leaving insufficient ice to sustain the earlier level of runoff.
- Most Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) river basins are projected to approach peak water around mid-century, followed by declining water availability.
- The HKH spans eight countries, including India, and supports major Asian river systems.
- Glacier retreat also creates unstable glacial lakes, increasing the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
- Only 21 of an estimated 40,000 glaciers in the HKH are currently monitored on the ground, indicating a significant monitoring gap.
