Context
Six Yamuna basin States, namely Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, have signed an agreement to implement the long-pending Kishau Multipurpose Project. The project aims to improve water storage, irrigation, hydropower generation and environmental flows in the Yamuna.

Explanation
- Kishau Multipurpose Project involves construction of a major dam on the Tons River, an important tributary of the Yamuna, along the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border.
- It is one of three major Upper Yamuna storage projects, along with Lakhwar and Renukaji, envisaged under the 1994 Yamuna water-sharing agreement.
- The project will provide water storage, irrigation, drinking water and hydropower, while additional flows are expected to support Yamuna rejuvenation.
- It is expected to create irrigation potential for about 97,000 hectares.
- The Centre has declared Kishau a National Project and will provide 90% Central Assistance for the water component, with the participating States sharing the remaining 10%.
- The agreement is an example of cooperative federalism in managing inter-State river waters.
