Context
The August 26, 2026 flash floods in Nepal severely damaged hydropower infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river corridor. The disaster highlights the growing vulnerability of Himalayan hydropower to floods, landslides, glacier-related hazards and rising sediment loads.

Explanation
- Nepal lies within the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), where steep slopes, glaciers, intense monsoon rainfall and young geology make rivers naturally hazard-prone.
- Climate change is accelerating glacier melt and permafrost thaw, increasing risks from ice-rock avalanches, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), landslides and flash floods.
- The August flood involved enormous quantities of water, sediment and boulders, damaging settlements and hydropower infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli corridor.
- Himalayan rivers carry high sediment loads, which can reduce reservoir capacity and cause abrasion of turbines and other hydropower equipment.
- Nepal depends heavily on hydroelectricity, making climate-resilient hydropower important for its energy security.
- Key responses include Integrated River Basin Management, climate-risk assessment, stronger glacier and sediment monitoring, Early Warning Systems and climate-resilient infrastructure.
