Context
NITI Aayog has launched the second edition of the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) to assess and compare the progress of States and Union Territories in the transition to electric mobility. 29 of India’s 36 States and Union Territories have notified Electric Vehicle (EV) policies.

- India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) is a NITI Aayog framework that tracks State and Union Territory progress in electric mobility and supports evidence-based policymaking.
- It assesses performance across major areas such as EV adoption, charging infrastructure, manufacturing ecosystem, research and innovation, and policy support.
- Electric mobility can reduce vehicular emissions and India’s dependence on imported crude oil while supporting energy security.
- Major Central initiatives include Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME), PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) and PM-eBus Sewa.
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes support automobiles and auto components and Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage.
- A reliable and spatially distributed public charging network is essential for wider EV adoption.
- The Unified Bharat e-Charge app seeks to improve accessibility and convenience of EV charging infrastructure.
