RBI Study on Private Capital Expenditure and Regional Investment Concentration (Source: The Indian Express)

Context

A research study published in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Bulletin highlights a significant revival in India’s private corporate investment cycle for FY2025-26. The data indicates robust business optimism and corporate capacity expansion, driven heavily by greenfield projects. However, the study exposes a steep geographic disparity, with capital heavily concentrated in a few highly industrialized regions.

Explanation

  • Private capital expenditure (capex) is the money businesses spend on long-term productive assets such as factories, plants, machinery, logistics capacity, R&D facilities, and other investments that expand the economy’s ability to produce and employ.
  • India’s private capex has been falling for years, even as public investment rises.
  • RBI tracks investment intentions using projects financed by banks/FIs and also examines ECBs and IPO-funded capex.
  • As per the study, Maharashtra (20.2%) overtook Gujarat (17.9%) as the top destination for private-sector capex; Rajasthan (11.1%) followed.
  • Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu along with above three states attract 67.1% of private capex. Maharashtra and Gujarat alone accounted for about 38%, showing strong spatial concentration.
  • Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Karnataka gained share, while Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu declined. Northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar attracted relatively fewer projects.
  • Such concentration highlights regional inequality in investment, influenced by infrastructure, markets, logistics, industrial ecosystems and the investment climate.
