Context
The Union Cabinet has approved the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) with an outlay of about ₹1.86 lakh crore.

Explanation
- The Green Energy Corridor strengthens transmission infrastructure for evacuating electricity from renewable-energy-rich regions to demand centres.
- Phase III envisages about ₹1.36 lakh crore for developing intra-State transmission systems.
- It seeks to integrate up to 135 GW of renewable energy across States and Union Territories by 2032–33.
- The scheme addresses renewable-energy curtailment, which occurs when available renewable power cannot be absorbed by the grid.
- A dedicated component of about ₹50,000 crore is planned for deploying nearly 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- BESS helps store surplus solar and wind power and supports grid balancing, peak management and reliability.
- Green Energy Corridors are important for India’s energy transition, renewable integration and reduction of fossil-fuel dependence.
