Context
ISRO is establishing a new facility at Chandrapur near Guwahati, Assam, under its Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis (NETRA). The facility will strengthen India’s capability to monitor satellites and space debris and improve Space Situational Awareness (SSA).
Explanation
- Space Situational Awareness (SSA) refers to knowledge of objects and conditions in the space environment and assessment of threats to space assets.
- NETRA — Network for Space Objects Tracking and Analysis is ISRO’s indigenous project for building space-surveillance capability using radars, optical telescopes and a control centre.
- Its observations help in orbit determination, cataloguing space objects, close-approach analysis, collision-risk assessment and atmospheric re-entry prediction.
- If two objects are predicted to approach dangerously close, satellites may undertake a Collision Avoidance Manoeuvre (CAM).
- The NETRA Control Centre is located at Peenya, Bengaluru, within the ISTRAC campus.
- An optical telescope at Hanle, Ladakh, and indigenous tracking radar capacity form part of NETRA’s expanding observational network.
- Such geographically distributed facilities strengthen space traffic management, debris monitoring and protection of India’s operational satellites.
