Context
A NITI Aayog member announced that India is developing a “Gross Domestic Knowledge Product (GDKP) framework” to identify and assess the country’s knowledge assets. The initiative aims to recognise India’s intellectual resources and their economic significance amid the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Explanation
- Knowledge assets include scientific research, patents, innovations, indigenous technologies, traditional knowledge and intellectual property.
- Unlike Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which measures the monetary value of final goods and services produced within a country, GDKP seeks to capture the contribution of knowledge to economic development.
- It reflects the growing importance of the knowledge economy, where research, innovation, human capital and technology drive productivity and economic growth.
- The initiative also seeks to safeguard India’s traditional and indigenous knowledge from misappropriation in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
- GDKP is still under development, and its measurement methodology and indicators have not yet been finalised.
