Context
Garba, a vibrant and devotional folk dance native to Gujarat, is the centerpiece of the ongoing Sharad Navratri festival, which commenced on Sunday, 11 October 2026 and will continue through 19 October 2026.

Explanation
- The Navratri festival in Gujarat has transformed Garba from a traditional community dance into a major cultural and economic activity involving tourism, event management and local businesses.
- Recognising its cultural significance, UNESCO inscribed Garba on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2023.
- The term Garba derives from the Sanskrit word Garbha Deep, referring to a lamp placed inside a perforated earthen pot, symbolising life and divine energy.
- Dancers move in circular formations around a lamp or an image of the Goddess, symbolising the cycle of life.
- Garba is associated with Shakti worship, while Dandiya Raas involves rhythmic movements using decorated sticks.
- Traditional Garba songs celebrate Goddess Amba and are accompanied by clapping, drums and other musical instruments.
- Its celebrations promote community participation, cultural continuity and livelihood opportunities.
