Context
China has objected to the Survey of India’s decision to standardise the names of 28 geographical features in Ladakh, calling the move illegal. India rejected China’s objections, reaffirming that the Union Territory of Ladakh is an integral and inalienable part of India.
Explanation
- Ladakh became a separate Union Territory on 31 October 2019, following the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
- India and China share a disputed boundary, with Aksai Chin, administered by China, claimed by India as part of Ladakh.
- The Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the de facto dividing line between Indian- and Chinese-controlled territories. It is not a mutually agreed international boundary.
- The western sector of the India–China boundary dispute covers Ladakh and Aksai Chin.
- The Survey of India, under the Department of Science and Technology, is India’s national mapping agency responsible for official geographical mapping.
