Paper: GS-III,
Subject: Environment, Ecology and Disaster Management,
Topic: Indian initiatives, efforts and commitments,
Issue: Role of BESS-in India’s Clean Energy Transition.
Context:
On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5th, a look at the role of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in ensuring India’s energy transition.
Key Highlights:
Energy Security: The climate crisis has reshaped the idea of energy security.
Clean energy push: Clean energy must meet four criteria: availability, accessibility, affordability, and environmental acceptability.
Role of Renewables: Renewables are key to achieving SDG 7: access to affordable, reliable, sustainable energy.
Role of Battery Energy Storage Systems-(BESS):

India’s-BESS Landscape:
- India targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power by 2030.
- As of January 2025: achieved 217.62 GW as against the Government target of 47 GW of BESS by 2032.
Key initiatives:
- Viability Gap Funding
- Waiver of transmission system charges
Challenges in BESS-Deployment: As highlighted in Economic Survey 2024–25:

Collaborative Initiatives:
- Delhi BESS pilot: Collaboration between GEAPP, IndiGrid, and BSES Rajdhani. It aims to build regulatory, technical, and financial capacity.
- Innovative partnerships: Innovative partnerships essential for scaling BESS blending public, private, and philanthropic resources.
Conclusion: India is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy. BESS is essential to maximise the potential of clean energy and reduce emissions. BESS can help achieve SDG 7 (Clean and Affordable Energy), Improve grid reliability and ensure energy self-sufficiency.
