Context:

Based on UGC recommendations (2023), the Ministry of Education has issued over 12 Letters of Intent to top foreign universities to set up campuses in India.

Key Highlights:

Foreign educational institutions in India:

  • One U.K. university has already opened in Gurugram for 2025–26 session and others will follow in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and NCR.
  • NEP 2020: It is in accordance with the NEP 2020 vision for global competitiveness while staying rooted in Indian ethos. NEP 2020 calls for re-imagining higher education to make India globally competitive.
  • UGC Guidelines: UGC’s 2023 regulatory framework also permits foreign universities to set up campuses in India with operational autonomy and light regulation. It aims to enhance access to world-class education domestically, reduce dependency on studying abroad.
