Paper: GS-II, Subject: International Relations, Topic: Global Issue, Issue: Neighbourhood Diplomacy and West Asia Crisis
Context:
The recent escalation of conflict in West Asia, particularly following the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by the United States. The war has reverberated through South Asia, affecting millions of South Asian expatriates in the region and raising questions about India’s diplomatic stance.

India’s Response with Diplomacy
- India’s initial response to the conflict has been scrutinized for its perceived alignment with U.S. and Israeli actions. India’s delayed condemnation of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader and subsequent attacks has raised concerns about a shift from its usual prompt diplomatic responses.
- India has traditionally followed a balanced West Asia policy, maintaining strong ties with all sides and ensuring strategic interests like safe passage for Indian ships.
- With the conflict intensifying, India needs to recalibrate its approach by emphasizing humanitarian concerns and promoting regional stability.

Way Forward
- India should actively strengthen regional coalitions and multilateral platforms such as IORA, Colombo Security Conclave, Quad, and BRICS to enhance strategic cooperation, expand diplomatic influence, and effectively address evolving security and economic challenges in the region.
- India must adopt a balanced and long-term West Asia strategy by maintaining strategic autonomy between competing blocs (U.S.–Israel and Iran) while integrating economic engagement, security cooperation, and humanitarian outreach to ensure regional stability and protect national interests.
