New START is dead: who stops the next nuclear arms race?

Paper: GS – II, Subject: International Relations, Topic: Global Issues, Issue: Consequences New START Treaty.

Context:

The New START Treaty nears expiry and arms control frameworks weaken, fears of a renewed US–Russia nuclear arms race are growing. The Doomsday Clock has moved closer to midnight amid rising risks, worsened by Ukraine war tensions and the possible end of limits on nuclear warheads.

Key Highlights:

Nuclear Proliferation:

  • Abandonment of Arms Control by Major Powers: If the US and Russia, which possess the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons, abandon arms control, it encourages proliferation elsewhere.
  • China’s Nuclear Expansion: China is already undergoing a significant nuclear expansion.
  • Iran’s Nuclear Program: The situation is particularly relevant to Iran, which is currently engaged in talks with the US regarding its nuclear program.
  • Domino Effect: If Iran acquires nuclear weapons, other regional powers like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt are likely to follow suit.
  • Increased Instability in West Asia: A nuclear-armed West Asia would be incredibly dangerous, with multiple countries possessing nuclear weapons pointed in various directions.

The Need for Action:

  • Reagan’s Example: Ronald Reagan’s experience watching “The Day After,” a film depicting the horrors of nuclear war, influenced his commitment to arms control.
  • Trump and Putin’s Responsibility: Trump and Putin should consider the potential consequences of nuclear conflict and prioritize arms control.
  • Diplomacy is Key: Even if an arms race seems inevitable, continued dialogue and negotiations can buy time and potentially lead to a breakthrough.
  • The Doomsday Clock: If the arms race prevails, the Doomsday Clock will continue to move closer to midnight, signifying an increased risk of global catastrophe.
Consequences of New START Treaty Expiration

The expiration of the New START treaty and the erosion of the arms control architecture pose significant threats to global security. The potential for a nuclear arms race, increased low-intensity conflicts, and nuclear proliferation demands immediate attention and a renewed commitment to diplomacy and arms control. Leaders must recognize the stakes and work towards a more stable and secure world.
