Paper: GS – III, Subject: Science and Technology, Topic: Medical science and Health, Issue: Organ Donation in India.
Context:
In a recent episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared poignant stories illustrating the life-saving potential of deceased organ donation.
- He highlighted the case of 10-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham, whose family chose to donate her organs, alongside inspiring accounts of organ recipients who have resumed fulfilling lives post-transplant.
Key Takeaways:
| National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO): NOTTO is a national-level organization established under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Headquarters: Located on the Institute of Pathology (ICMR) Building, New Delhi. Aim: To coordinate, regulate, and promote organ and tissue donation and transplantation in India. Facilitate the safe and efficient allocation and utilization of organs and tissues. |
The Current Landscape of Organ Donation in India:

Historical Data:
- The number of deceased organ donors first surpassed 900 in 2016, with fluctuations in subsequent years: 930 in 2016, 773 in 2017, and 941 in 2022.
- The number of deceased donor transplants has risen from 2,265 in 2016 to 2,694 in 2022.
Organ Demand vs. Supply
Demand for Organs:
- India requires approximately 1.75 to 2 lakh kidneys annually, yet only 13,476 kidney transplants were performed in 2024.
- For liver, heart, and lung transplants, the need is around 50,000, while only 4,901 transplants were conducted in 2024.
- Pancreas transplants were alarmingly low, with only 44 performed against an estimated need of 2,500.
Deceased Donation Rate:
- The deceased organ donation rate in India is critically low at 0.77 per million population, significantly trailing behind countries like Thailand (6.21), China (4.5), and Spain (48).

Prime Minister push boosts organ donation awareness, but India still faces a major demand – supply gap. Stronger reforms, public engagement, and collective efforts are vital to build a sustainable, life-saving donation ecosystem.
