Paper: GS – III, Subject: Indian Economy, Topic: Infrastructure, Issue: Kaleshwaram project.
Context:
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) is a multi-purpose irrigation project situated on the Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Bhupalpally, Telangana. It was conceived by the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government as a lifeline for the state.
- Billed as the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project, it aims to harness the Godavari River’s water resources to provide irrigation, drinking water, and industrial water supply to several districts in Telangana.
- The project’s upstream influence lies at the confluence of the Pranahita and Godavari rivers, utilizing a canal network extending over 1,800 km.

Key Takeaways:
Where was it built?
The KLIP involves the construction of several barrages across the Godavari River at the following locations:
- Ramadugu
- Medigadda
- Sundilla
- Annaram
These barrages store water to meet the drinking water and irrigation needs of the region.
The initial estimated cost of the project was ₹71,000 crores, but it escalated to over ₹1 lakh crore.

About Godavari River: The Godavari River, also known as Dakshin Ganga, is the largest peninsular river system in the region. Its basin is bordered by the Satmala hills to the north, the Ajanta range and Mahadeo hills to the south, the Eastern Ghats to the east, and the Western Ghats to the west.Originating from Trimbakeshwar near Nasik in Maharashtra, the Godavari River flows for approximately 1465 km before reaching the Bay of Bengal. The Godavari basin spans across Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, with smaller portions in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and the UT of Puducherry. Right bank tributaries include the Pravara, Manjira, and Maner. Left bank tributaries comprise the Purna, Pranhita, Indravati, and Sabari rivers. |
Advantages and Issues of Kaleshwaram Lift Project:

Way Forward:
- National Dam Safety Authority emphasized complete rehabilitation to avoid any compromises in the Medigadda barrage.
- Rehabilitation and relief package needs to be revisited to resolve the ‘developmental displacement’ issue.
- The project should undertake corrections as being studied by the Anil Jain (Center Water Commission member) committee appointed by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to study the recent issues in the KLIP Medigadda barrage.
