Context: The Government highlighted the progress of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme, under which over 89,000 sewer and septic tank workers and 2.81 lakh waste pickers have been validated and provided with PPE, health cards and other welfare benefits.
Explanation
- NAMASTE (National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) is a Central Sector Scheme jointly implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.
- It replaces the Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS) and focuses on mechanised sewer and septic tank cleaning, eliminating hazardous manual scavenging.
- Key components include worker profiling, PPE kits, health insurance, Ayushman Bharat coverage, skill development, entrepreneurship support and Emergency Response Sanitation Units (ERSUs).
- The scheme complements the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, aiming for zero sanitation-related fatalities, improved occupational safety and social inclusion.
