Why in News?
India and South Africa held the 9th Joint Defence Committee meeting in Johannesburg, exchanging two agreements on submarine cooperation and enhancing ties in defence production, research, and military collaboration.
Description:
- Historical Defence Ties: India and South Africa signed their first MoU on Defence Equipment Cooperation in 1996, marking the beginning of formal defence collaboration. This was upgraded in 2000 to broaden cooperation across more defence domains. The partnership is grounded in their shared anti-colonial legacy and commitment to South–South cooperation.
- 9th JDC Meeting: The 9th Joint Defence Committee (JDC) meeting was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 23–24, 2025.
- Leadership: The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The South African delegation was headed by Acting Secretary for Defence Dr. Thobekile Gamede.
- Submarine Cooperation: Two agreements were exchanged during the meeting in the field of submarine cooperation, indicating growing maritime security collaboration.
- Sub-committees: Two sub-committees – one on Defence Policy & Military Cooperation, and the other on Defence Acquisition, Production, and R&D – submitted their progress reports to the JDC.
