AI Data Centres Put Pressure on India’s Power Grid (Source: The Hindu)

Context

The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centres is increasing electricity demand and creating challenges for India’s power grid. Grid operators have highlighted the need to upgrade transmission infrastructure and monitoring systems to manage sudden fluctuations in electricity consumption.

AI Data Centres

Explanation

  • Data centres are facilities containing servers and computing equipment used to store and process large amounts of digital information.
  • AI data centres require substantially more electricity than conventional facilities because they use powerful processors and cooling systems.
  • Their electricity consumption can fluctuate sharply depending on the workload of Large Language Models (LLMs) and other AI applications.
  • These sudden fluctuations create an imbalance between electricity demand and supply, affecting power grid stability.
  • Conventional power generators may struggle to adjust electricity production quickly to match these fluctuations.
  • Consequently, expanding AI infrastructure requires grid modernisation, improved monitoring systems and transmission upgrades, whose costs may be recovered through transmission charges.
