Prehistoric Rock Art and Human Activity in Aravalli Region (Source: Indian Express)

Context:

A wildlife trail in Gurugram’s Aravalli forests has led to the discovery of cup-shaped depressions, geometric engravings, game-board-like patterns, stone tools and a large foot engraving. Experts suggest that the site shows continuity of human activity from early tool-making traditions to later symbolic, ritual and social life.

Aravalli Rock Art and India’s Prehistoric Legacy

Explanation:

  • Aravalli Range is one of the oldest fold mountain systems in the world and has several prehistoric and archaeological sites.
  • Petroglyphs are images, symbols or designs carved, engraved or pecked on rock surfaces.
  • Cupules are cup-shaped depressions made on rocks and are among the earliest forms of rock art.
  • Palaeolithic tools such as hand axes and cleavers indicate early human tool-making and survival activities.
  • Acheulean tradition is linked with Lower Palaeolithic stone tools, especially bifacial hand axes.
  • Rock art may reflect symbolic behaviour, ritual practices, social communication and cognitive development.
  • Game-board-like engravings indicate possible later social or recreational activities.
  • Such findings help trace the transition from basic survival activities to complex cultural and symbolic life.
