Gir Lion Deaths and Need for Multiple Populations

Context:

Recent deaths of Gir lions due to suspected Babesiosis infection have raised conservation concerns. Experts note that while the deaths are not alarming at present, they highlight the risk of keeping Asiatic lions concentrated in one landscape.

Asiatic Lion Conservation and Population Security

Explanation:

  • Asiatic lions are found only in and around Gir National Park, Gujarat.
  • Their single-population status creates risk from epidemics, natural disasters and genetic bottlenecks.
  • Babesiosis is a tick-borne protozoan disease caused by Babesia parasite.
  • It can cause fever, anaemia, weakness and death in stressed or infected animals.
  • Conservation strategy requires multiple geographically separated populations.
  • Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh was earlier identified for lion translocation.
