Context:
India condemned recent attacks on UN peacekeepers deployed under UNIFIL in Lebanon, calling for accountability and urging all parties to ensure the safety and inviolability of UN missions in conflict zones.
BACKGROUND:
- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) exists to maintain stability in southern Lebanon, authorized by the UN Security Council in 1978 after Israeli invasions.
- It monitors the “Blue Line” border, prevents hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, ensures the area is free of illegal weapons, and supports the Lebanese Armed Forces.
- UN Security Council Resolution 2589 (2021) emphasises accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.
- UN Peacekeepers (called Blue Helmets) operate under principles of neutrality, consent of parties, and limited use of force.
- India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions globally.
- UN Peacekeeping Operations: Conducted by the United Nations since 1948; aim to maintain ceasefires, protect civilians, and support political processes in conflict zones.
