Context:
Recently, renewed student mobilisation around education, employment, social justice and constitutional rights has brought Bhagat Singh’s political legacy back into public discussion. His life continues to inspire young people to study, organise and take part in democratic struggles.
Explanation
- Bhagat Singh (1907–1931) was a revolutionary nationalist associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
- He helped establish the Naujawan Bharat Sabha (1926) at Lahore to mobilise youth against colonialism and communalism.
- Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw non-lethal bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly (1929) to protest the Public Safety Bill and Trade Disputes Bill.
- He was tried in the Lahore Conspiracy Case for the killing of British police officer J.P. Saunders.
- Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were executed on 23 March 1931; the day is commemorated as Shaheed Diwas.
- His ideological outlook evolved towards socialism, secularism, rationalism and anti-imperialism.
- His writings include “Why I Am an Atheist” and “To Young Political Workers.”
