The Union Government announced integration of AI tools in teaching from the next academic session across levels (pre-primary to higher education). The initiative is anchored by the launch of Bodhan AI at IIT Madras.

1.    Core Institutional Framework

  • Anchor: Bodhan AI – A Not-for-Profit company based at the Centre of Excellence in AI for Education, IIT Madras.
  • Fiscal Support: Initial Union Budget allocation of ₹500 crore.
  • Objective: Developing indigenous, sovereign AI tools specifically for the Indian education sector.

2.   The Bharat EduAI Stack (DPI Model)

  • Concept: To be developed as a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), similar to UPI or Aadhaar.
  • Mechanism: A scalable, foundational “plug-and-play” layer on which private and public EdTech applications can be built.
  • Philosophy: Open ecosystem for startups; deployment on sovereign digital infrastructure to ensure data privacy and security.

3.   Functional Area

Bodhan AI’s functional areas span from developing core multilingual AI capabilities and voice-based teaching tools to enabling automated assessments, personalized student worksheets, and data-driven administrative support for teachers and policymakers.
