Bolivia’s Political and Economic Crisis (Source: The Hindu)

Context:

Bolivia has begun returning to normalcy after the government declared a state of emergency to address weeks of protests and highway blockades. The unrest was triggered by economic difficulties, including fuel shortages, foreign currency shortages, inflationary pressures, and public dissatisfaction with government policies.

Bolivia Economic Crisis and the Politics of Resource Dependence

Explanation:

  • Bolivia is a landlocked country in South America, bordered by Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Peru; the constitutional capital is Sucre, while the seat of government is La Paz.
  • It lies in the Andes Mountains and contains important geographical features such as Lake Titicaca (shared with Peru) and parts of the Amazon Basin.
  • Bolivia possesses some of the world’s largest lithium reserves, particularly in the Salar de Uyuni, making it strategically important for electric vehicle batteries.
  • The current crisis arose from fuel shortages, US dollar scarcity, rising living costs, and fiscal pressures, leading to widespread protests and road blockades.
  • Road blockades disrupted the movement of food, fuel, medicines and essential goods, affecting economic activity across the country.
  • The government declared a state of emergency and sought legislative support to restore transportation and public services.
  • Bolivia has historically depended on natural gas exports and commodity revenues; declining revenues and external imbalances have increased economic stress.
