
Context:
Sacred Piprahwa relics of Gautam Buddha were ceremoniously brought to Leh (Ladakh) for public display on occasion of Buddha Purnima. The relics are being displayed across Leh and Zanskar, offering a rare spiritual opportunity for devotees.
- Buddha relics refer to the physical remains and sacred objects associated with Gautama Buddha, such as ashes, bones, or items used by him, which are traditionally enshrined in stupas and monasteries and hold deep religious significance in Buddhism.
- Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Buddha, making it one of the most important festivals for Buddhists globally.
- Excavators discovered the Piprahwa Relics in 1898 at the Piprahwa Stupa in Uttar Pradesh, believed to be ancient Kapilavastu, the birthplace/early childhood place of Lord Buddha (Lumbini, located in modern-day Nepal, is currently recognized as the birthplace of Lord Buddha). These relics, unearthed by British colonial engineer William Claxton Peppé.
