Context:
Scientists have developed a highly sensitive receptor that enables CAR-T cells to detect even faint levels of tumour proteins, overcoming a major limitation in treating solid cancers like kidney and ovarian tumours. The approach may help eliminate previously undetectable cancer cells.
- CAR-T Cell Therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell Therapy) is an advanced cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells (T-cells) to fight cancer.
- In this, Patient’s T-cells are genetically engineered to recognise and destroy cancer cells.
- Effective in blood cancers, but limited in solid tumours due to antigen heterogeneity.
- Cancer hides itself: Tumour cells show very tiny amounts of markers (like CD70), so the immune system cannot easily recognize them.
- Normal CAR-T cells miss them: Regular CAR-T therapy cannot detect these very weak signals, so some cancer cells escape treatment.
- Why this happens: A protein called EZH2 reduces the production of these markers by controlling genes, making cancer cells “invisible.”
- New solution (HIT receptor): Scientists created a smarter receptor that can detect even tiny signals, helping CAR-T therapy work better, especially for solid tumours.
