A recent genomic study on Odisha’s Chilika Lake found that seasonal and salinity changes strongly influence cyanobacterial communities and ecological functions in the lagoon. The study highlighted how environmental stress can alter biodiversity, nutrient cycling and the stability of fragile coastal ecosystems.
- Chilika Lake is Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon located on the east coast of Odisha at the mouth of the Daya River flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
- A brackish water ecosystem contains a mixture of freshwater and seawater, making salinity variation a key ecological factor.
- Chilika Lake is recognised as a Ramsar Wetland Site and is famous for biodiversity, fisheries, migratory birds and Irrawaddy dolphins.
