Conservation of Chocolate Mahseer in Sikkim (Source: The Print)

Context

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang released Chocolate Mahseer fish into the Rangeet River during a River Fest. The initiative aims to conserve indigenous fish species and protect Sikkim’s aquatic biodiversity.

Chocolate Mahseer Conservation: Protecting Himalayan River Biodiversity

Explanation

  • Chocolate Mahseer, also called Copper Mahseer, is a freshwater fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family.
  • It inhabits fast-flowing, oxygen-rich Himalayan rivers with rocky riverbeds.
  • It is distributed across the Brahmaputra and Chindwin river basins and parts of South and Southeast Asia.
  • It is the State Fish of Sikkim and Nagaland and is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
  • The Rangeet River, a major tributary of the Teesta River, belongs to the Brahmaputra river system.
  • Fish ranching involves releasing hatchery-reared fish into natural water bodies to replenish wild populations.
  • Habitat degradation, pollution, overfishing and river fragmentation threaten mahseer populations.
  • Conservation measures include habitat restoration, sustainable fishing and protection of breeding grounds.
