Colombia’s “Cocaine Hippos” and India’s Vantara Relocation Proposal

Colombia’s “Cocaine Hippos”

Context:

Colombia is struggling to control the rapidly growing population of invasive “cocaine hippos” introduced by Pablo Escobar. India’s Vantara has proposed relocating these animals as a humane alternative to culling.

  • Hippopotamus is a large semi-aquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa, commonly found in rivers and lakes.
  • It is known for its aggressive and territorial behaviour, especially in water, and is considered one of the most dangerous large animals.
  • Hippos spend daytime in water to regulate body temperature and come out at night to graze on grass.
  • They typically give birth in water, and calves can swim soon after birth, reflecting adaptation to aquatic habitats.
  • In the 1980s, Pablo Escobar imported four hippos to Colombia, which were left unmanaged after his death.
  • Due to absence of natural predators and favourable conditions, their population has grown to around 200, spreading across river systems.
  • These hippos are classified as an invasive species, as they are non-native and disrupt local ecosystems.
  • They threaten indigenous biodiversity, alter water chemistry (nutrient loading, algal blooms), and increase risks of human-wildlife conflict.
  • Scientists recommend population control (including culling), as sterilisation is costly and relocation is logistically complex.
  • India’s Vantara wildlife centre has proposed relocation, offering veterinary care and habitat management as a humane alternative, though feasibility and acceptance remain uncertain.
