Why in News?

At the Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC) 2025 in Kolkata (Sept 17), India’s top military leadership decided to establish three joint military stations and a unified Tri-services Education Corps, advancing integration and jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force ahead of future theatre commands.

Description:

  • Apex-level brainstorming forum of the Armed Forces.
  • Held in Kolkata, West Bengal (15–17 Sept 2025).
  • Attended by: Defence Minister, NSA, MoS Defence, CDS, Defence Secretary & Service Chiefs.
  • Theme: “Year of Reforms – Transforming for the Future”.

Purpose & Focus Areas:

  • Provides a platform for civil & military leadership to exchange views at conceptual and strategic levels.
  • Focus on:
    • Reforms, Transformation & Change
    • Operational Preparedness
    • Integration & technological modernisation
  • Ensures field insights from officers/personnel feed into top-level discussions.

Key Outcomes:

First-ever Joint Military Stations (3 announced):

  • Combine Army, Navy & Air Force facilities under one lead service.
  • Cover logistics, repair/maintenance, supply, stores & infrastructure.
  • Locations under discussion: Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Gwalior, Pune, Secunderabad.
  • Aim: optimise resources and test tri-service functioning → stepping stone to Theatre Commands.

Creation of a Tri-services Education Corps:

  • Merges education branches of Army, Navy & IAF.
  • Objectives: manpower rationalisation, infrastructure optimisation, enhanced integration.

Push for Jointness & Integration:

  • Builds on: joint logistics nodes, cross-postings, integrated procurement.
  • Supports the roadmap for Theaterisation.

Theatre Commands:

  • Concept: integrate Army, Navy & IAF assets into geography-specific unified commands.
  • Debate:
    • IAF: concerned about splitting scarce combat assets → suggests Joint Planning Centre in Delhi.
    • Army & Navy: see theaterisation as inevitable for future conflicts.
