Context:
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released IS 20201:2026 – Community Seed Bank Management Requirements to standardise the functioning of Community Seed Banks across India. The standard aims to conserve indigenous crop varieties, strengthen agrobiodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 (Zero Hunger)

Explanation:
- Community Seed Banks (CSBs) are locally managed institutions that collect, conserve, multiply and distribute traditional and indigenous seeds.
- They play a key role in conserving agrobiodiversity, genetic resources and climate-resilient crop varieties.
- Indigenous landraces often possess traits such as drought tolerance, pest resistance and adaptability to local conditions.
- CSBs support in-situ conservation, seed sovereignty, food security and sustainable agriculture.
- The new BIS standard (IS 20201:2026) provides guidelines for seed collection, storage, documentation, quality assurance and community participation.
- The initiative aligns with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood goals.
