The Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education (CMS: E), 2025, under the 80th round of the NSS, revealed that government schools account for 55.9% enrolments, private schools charge nearly nine times higher fees, and about 27% students depend on private coaching.

- Account for 55.9% of total enrolments
- Rural India: 66% students in govt. schools
- Urban India: 30.1% students in govt. schools
- Expenditure:
- Rural: ₹8,382 per student (average)
- Urban: ₹23,470 per student (average)
- Covers all levels of enrolment and all types of schools
- Private Coaching:
- 27% students availed private coaching in current academic year
- Urban areas: 30.7%
- Rural areas: 25.5%
- Funding for Education:
- 95% students’ expenses funded by household members
- Only 1.2% of students reported to the Govt. scholarships as the first major source of funding
