Context
India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose to a 19-month high of 4.45% in July 2026, mainly due to higher food and fuel prices. Food inflation accelerated to 5.2%, while inflation in restaurant and accommodation services also increased.

Explanation
- Retail inflation measures changes in prices paid by consumers and is primarily tracked through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), compiled by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
- CPI covers major consumption groups such as food, housing, clothing, fuel and miscellaneous goods and services, with food having a significant weight.
- Food inflation is sensitive to monsoon, crop damage, cropping cycles, supply disruptions and global edible-oil prices; therefore, supply shocks can quickly affect headline CPI.
- Fuel prices also have indirect effects by raising transportation, restaurant and other service costs.
- Under India’s flexible inflation-targeting framework, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) targets CPI inflation at 4% with a tolerance band of ±2 percentage points.
- Persistent inflation can influence the RBI’s repo-rate and monetary-policy decisions.
