Context
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), Lucknow to conserve Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) medicinal plant species,etc.
Explanation
- CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow is a premier CSIR institute specializing in plant science, taxonomy, conservation and botanical research.
- The MoU focuses on conserving RET medicinal plant species through tissue culture, specialized seed banks, and ethnobotanical assessment of tribal bioresources.
- Ethnobotany studies the relationship between indigenous communities and plants, including their medicinal, cultural and economic uses.
- All research requires Prior Informed Consent (PIC) of Gram Sabhas and tribal communities in accordance with the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
- The partnership recognizes Traditional Knowledge (TK), follows Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanisms, promotes joint intellectual property rights, and channels benefits through National/State Biodiversity Funds while building the capacity of tribal youth.
