Context
Recently, the Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, strengthening disclosure and grievance-redressal requirements for e-commerce platforms. The amended provisions will become operational from 1 January 2027.
Explanation
- The rules operate under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which provides safeguards against unfair trade practices and protects consumer interests.
- The amendment responds to concerns such as dark patterns, bundled fees, inadequate seller/importer information and weak grievance mechanisms.
- Every e-commerce entity must prominently disclose its legal name, principal geographical address, branches, website details and customer-care contact information.
- For imported goods, platforms must disclose details of the importer and the country of origin, improving transparency and traceability.
- Platforms must provide details of their Grievance Officer.
- The Grievance Officer must acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and redress them within one month.
- These measures strengthen consumer choice, informed consent, accountability and transparency in digital marketplaces.
