India’s E20 Ethanol Blending Programme: Benefits and Sustainability Concerns

Context

India has rapidly expanded E20 petrol, containing 20% ethanol, to reduce crude-oil imports, save foreign exchange and promote cleaner fuels. Concerns remain regarding feedstock sustainability, food security, water use and compatibility of older vehicles.

E20 Ethanol Blending: Energy Security and Sustainability

Explanation

  • E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol, a renewable biofuel generally produced in India from sugarcane-based feedstocks, maize and surplus/damaged foodgrains.
  • The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme aims to reduce crude-oil import dependence, foreign-exchange expenditure and certain vehicular emissions.
  • India achieved around 20% ethanol blending in 2025, ahead of its original 2030 target.
  • Ethanol has a higher octane number but lower energy density than petrol, potentially affecting mileage.
  • Older E5/E10 vehicles may face compatibility concerns because ethanol is hygroscopic and can affect some rubber, plastic and fuel-system components.
  • Large-scale ethanol production raises the food-versus-fuel, land-use and water-footprint debate, particularly for sugarcane.
  • Second-generation (2G) ethanol from agricultural residues can improve long-term sustainability.
